Madman State speaks to Matterz about his new single 'Believe it Now'

1.       ‘Believe it now’ is an uplifting and positive song embracing one’s uniqueness and authenticity. I basically thought it a good idea to show people I’m not afraid of making music in my way that feels natural to me, I see people so easily swayed by new trends and fashions that it made me want to celebrate the power of being yourself and making things happen for yourself in this way. Creatively it all started with the beat production, producing the beat felt very uplifting to me and was almost like an evolutionary step in my creative process (if you take a look at previous songs of mine). Then writing the song the melodies came first with the subject of the overall song that lead to the rap lyrics.

2.       First and fore most I’ve always been a rapper and it started out this way. Obviously looking back now there’s so many accolades I’ve made as a musician from being a self-taught guitarist/pianist, supporting big acts and performing all across London. But when you take it back to the essence it started out as writing raps at home so I could go impress the guys the next day in the playground rap cyphers. Hip hop is where it all started for me, but my eclectic taste allowed me to implement elements of other genres and song-writing aspects into my music. I’m driven a lot by making powerful/memorable songs, and combining them with engaging visuals.

3.       It’s been tough not being able to go out and perform/network like before, but I never allow alone time to go to waste - been occupied finishing beats, songs, various collaborations and performing on Instagram live and zoom events. It’s also allowed me to reflect on my plan moving forward - I’ve got so many more releases lined up so my schedule is looking pretty exciting ;)

4.       For the rest of this year I’m going to continue dropping new stuff, more information will be available on that soon. As for 2021, I’ve learnt a lot from the occurrences of this year so I plan to continue refining my process of releasing songs and social media content. Also looking forward for the visuals I have planned for this year! Also I’ve had some exciting news regarding my bits of acting I do on the side but I won’t reveal too much just yet haha.

5.       Oooh this is a tough one. Considering Artists who are alive and breathing, I think working with one of my biggest influences would be a sick experience - Pharrell Williams. I literally studied how this guy plays chords and composes his songs! A few others I’d be super excited about working with - Kaytranada, Jamiroquai, Anderson Paak, Clams Casino & Kojey Radical to name a few…. My taste varies so much!

‘We can’t wait to hear more! ' Buzz Music  'New heat from London’s Madman State' Blatantly Blunt

Believe it Now is the latest nu-wave hip-hop anthem from London based rapper Madman State, supported by BRBradio.co.uk, DJ Shorty Of Chip Shop Radio and Reprezent Radio. The musician and producer has boundless energy and passion and is known for incorporating musical elements from other styles into his unique blend of hip hop and trap. The track features vocals from emotive singer Anousha, and the two’s performance chemistry can be seen in the glossy music video. Madman State says, “Believe it Now felt like a transition from where I was musically. I embraced writing authentic good-feeling melodies and flows. It only made sense to promote a positive message with this song. Anousha is an artist I've had the pleasure of working with before and has a light and gentle voice which I felt was perfect for the melodic appeal of this song. Additionally her input in the video helped elevate the visual to a higher level which I'm really happy with.”

Having supported the likes of Foreign Beggars, Onoe Caponoe (High Focus Records), MC Bushkin (Heartless Crew) and Children Of Zeus, Madman State is firmly embedded in the London hip-hop scene and has won a loyal fanbase.  He released his CBT Mixtape early 2018, with a collection of critically acclaimed visuals that assisted the project. The video for the single Tension was hand selected for a special screening at the 2020 London Music Video Festival award in July 2020 where it will be an entry for the competition. Madman State’s music has been featured on the ‘Stop, Speak, Support’ 2018 campaign launched by The Anti-Bullying Alliance. The piece was played nationwide across on-demand streaming services and also personally viewed by Prince William himself, who is a member of the Taskforce team in conjunction with the Anti Bullying Alliance. Exclusive Interview! Kev Kelly speaks to Matterz about his new single 'Everything's on Fire'

  1. Describe yourself

I’m Kev. I’m from New Jersey but I moved to Nashville for school when I was 19. I never really thought being a musician was going to be a real career path for me so I focused more on music supervising. I would try and watch a different movie every night and replace the songs that they played in the movies with different ones or I would try and score the scenes myself. That led to me writing original songs that I thought could take a scene from good to great. I found a producer who I really connected with and we started building songs and tracks and i was lucky enough to have them heard by the right people and got to sign my publishing deal. Aside from music I’m a huge sports fan and that’s a huge part of my every day so the quarantine has been less than ideal

  1. What is your music like?

I would say my sound is just a culmination of all the things I like. My dad would play oasis, frank sinatra, bill joel, the doors, Otis Redding. Sort of a wide array. When I started figuring out my own music tastes I was really into rap. I loved the way they sampled and repurposed old songs to make something completely new. I would say Kanye west is probably the best example of that. I really just try to make things I would like to listen to and not really care about the formula of a pop song

  1. Who are your influences?

Otis Redding, Jay Z, Stormzy, Kanye West, the 1975, Dave, dua lipa, childish gambino, Dermot Kennedy

  1. Is there a song you're listening to alot atm?

At the moment it would probably be “If you’re too shy” by the 1975. I love the 80’s feel. It’s great for summer

  1. What are you most proud of?

I would say convincing my parents that not becoming a doctor was the right call. I’m not sure they thought I could make money making music

  1. What is your career goal?

I would love to play certain venues. Here in Nashville that would be the ryman. Red rocks in Colorado and royal Albert hall

  1. What have you been doing with yourself during the lockdown?

This is going to sound ridiculous but every night at 5:57cst a man on the internet races horses on an electric track. It’s the one thing I look forward to daily

  1. Who would you love to work with?

Dream collab is tough. There are so many great artists out there that I would love to have the opportunity to work with. But at this moment it would probably be j Cole. I love his music and what he stands for. He’s an incredible lyricist

  1. Tell us about Everything's on Fire

Everything’s on fire is a song I wrote in about 15 minutes. When things weren’t going great in my personal life I had this dream where I was running through a burning city but I had set the fire. I woke up that morning and had the song written before I had a cup of coffee

South African hip hop artist from Brighton Mrisi releases 'West Baby'

Hip-hop/jazz artist from Brighton with South African roots. Performed across South Africa, UK festivals and cutting edge London venues including Ronnie Scott’s and The Roundhouse. Featured on Complex, BBC radio, ITV, Channel 4 & Link Up TV.

 Spotify Link | Complex Premiere

West Baby is the new South African rooted hip-hop track from spoken-word multi-faceted artist Mrisi. The lyrics are as complex, thought-provoking and profound as the vibe is instinctive, chilled and rolling.  Typical of what Mrisi’s fans expect from him, you can enjoy West Baby on every level. “This track is a juxtaposition of the protagonist's identity - partly from the West,  partly an outsider hailing from lands the West colonised. The song explores the idea that the West still holds false moral superiority to the rest of the world. Using the words Amandla (Power) and Hamba (Depart/Move) I have included words from one of my South African languages, ‘Shangaan Tsonga’ to signify the duality of my identity.” Mrisi

Mrisi released his debut EP Mamela in 2018 to critical acclaim. His music has appeared in broadcast media including; ITV, Channel 4, MTV, BBC Radio Asian Network, BBC News, Pyro Radio, Link Up TV and Sofar Sounds.  Mrisi has toured across the UK and South Africa, working alongside artists such as Omar, Prince Fatty, Kokoroko, Sadat X, Octavian, Yazmyn Hendrix and countless other established artists. His performances include events for the Commonwealth Games, Brighton Dome, Concord 2, The RoundHouse and the world famous Ronnie Scott’s. As a live experience, his shows feature drums, saxophone, bass, guitar, backing vocals and keys. He fuses evocative sounds of South Africa with gritty British rap narrative and lyrics that range from immigration to ‘black lives matter’ to conflicts of identity.

Mrisi plans to tour South Africa in 2020/21, developing links and sounds that reflect the UK/SA blend. He says I am half South African and a member of the Shangaan Tribe. Shangaan is a specific style of music that has really captured my imagination.” He plans to release Mama, a spoken word ballad that he performed live on BBC Asian Network. Mrisi has also written an EP with singer songwriter Yazmyn Hendrix which they plan to release later in 2020.

Cecil releases 'Project Ceasefire'

Cecil (who this year supported Clean Bandit and Tom Odell on tour, headlined a BBC Introducing stage, is heralded by by the BBC, Clash, Line of Best Fit and, The Sun and is The Independent’s ‘Ones To Watch In 2019’ artist) is launching Project Ceasefire, whose MO is to keep those affected by knife crime, gun crime and youth violence connected to each other. Project Ceasefire is a place where all those affected by the current epidemic that plagues the country can connect  and support one another. Many of the families affected by knife crime have set up foundations in honour of those who they lost and do incredible things in their community and are fighting for changes in how youth crime is treated. Project Ceasefire will shine a light on the work they do and bring awareness to people in their communities. These foundations offer support and opportunities for young people in areas such as education and sports. Youth crime is something Cecil feels passionately about after hearing about a fatal stabbing in her area. She says “I was returning from the studio and my road was blocked due to an incident involving some young boys, which sadly resulted in someone being fatally stabbed and losing their life. The people with me commented ‘another stabbing’ almost as if it was normal. The fact that people are beginning to view this as normal struck a nerve in me and I wanted to do something to help towards the problem the country faces. There are far too many young lives being wasted so I hope my efforts contribute towards a better tomorrow and help prevent people from losing their lives to knife crime.”

2018 was a busy year for Cecil after she was nominated for ‘Best Solo Female’ at The U.M.A’s (Unsigned Music Awards) which led to Cecil having a jam packed Summer and taking to some big stages alongside some big names around the UK. Cecil opened the main stage at Jamie Oliver’s Big Feastival, Liverpool Sound City amongst the likes of Sam Fender & Grace Carter and her name also appeared alongside the likes of Jess Glynne, Razorlight, Chase & Status and many more. Cecil was also chosen from hundreds of acts by the BBC to warm up for the legendary Grace Jones with the BBC Introducing. Her solo skills at the piano also landed her a spot at The Royal Hampton Court warming up for another legendary figure in the shape of Jools Holland. Cecil takes a methodical and timeless approach to her music to create something truly unique. Born and raised in Berkshire with family roots hailing from Manchester. Cecil takes her name along with a heavy amount of inspiration from her pioneering broadcasting producer Great Uncle, Cecil McGivern. He wrote several radio plays for BBC Radio during World War II, was responsible for broadcasting the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and is also responsible for the screenplay for the original 1946 version of Charles Dickens famous novel “Great Expectations”. Cecil’s writing has influences of her Great Uncle’s penmanship infused into her music today.

Matterz Interview: Kurtis Lee @TheLuckyGuys

16-year old Kurtis Lee is already considered as a teen phenomenon. We still keep trying to copy his dance routines but unfortunately, we can't #MoveLikeKurtis. So, we sat and talked with this amazing and multi-talented young guy and definitely we can say that the future is yours Kurtis.

1)        Hi Kurtis. How have you been?

I've been good. How have you been?

2)        Tell us your story so far and describe a typical day of you.

My story... well I started dancing when I was 4 yrs old doing street dance. As I grew older I got into singing too.

A typical day for me... well that depends on the day. Monday to Friday I have college where I study dance and then most evenings I'm either doing dance classes or teaching other kids dance as well. At the weekend I dance and sing. That’s it, performing full time.

3)        You recently released your single with The Lucky Guys ‘Happy Life’. What’s the story behind the track?

The song is an upbeat, feel-good song. It's meant to lift your spirits and make you feel good.

4)        How was the recording and writing process with The Lucky Guys?

The song was written by the Lucky Guys and I was approached about doing the vocals to go on the track. We recorded the vocals at Konk Studios in North London where many famous artists have recorded like Adele. It was a great day and everyone was really pleased with what we had created at the end of the session.

5)        What’s ‘Happy Life’ for you?

Happy life to me is being with friends or family and having a good time. It can be anything from a holiday overseas to just chilling at the local park with my friends.

6)        We are in love with the video and its positive vibe. Do you have to share with us some funny behind-the-scenes stories?

The video was recorded at the beginning of Summer and all the people in the video were my friends from my performing arts school, I Got Soul. We had a great day and for lunch the record company supplied pizzas for everyone... I've never seen so much pizza before. There must have been 30 or 40 pizzas delivered and trust me... it all went... hahaha

7)        You are only 16 and you are a great dancer! We keep trying to #MoveLikeKurtis but it’s not so easy. Give us some advice to copy the dancing routines.

Just keep trying, never give up and feel the music your vibing to. Everybody has a dance or two inside them... it's just about having the confidence to let it out.

8)        Who are your favourite artists and bands? How do you incorporate their work in your sound and vocals?

I like a wide range of singers from current singers like Aitch and Stormy to older singers like Michael Jackson and Ne-yo. I also like a wide range of music...one minute I can being playing something old like James Brown or Nina Simone and then I'll be straight into something like Nirvana or Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Matterz Interview: Tenaj

Tenaj recently released 'Be As I am Metamorphosis' and made us put our dancing shoes and go straight to the dancefloor. We had a very interesting conversation with her and we are pretty sure that you will love her strong, and full of emotions, personality.

Hi Tenaj. How have you been?
I'm great thanks and you?

Tell us your story so far. When did you start thinking of a career in music?
I started very early. My uncle was a professional photographer and he started to take pictures of me since I'm 6 months old. From modelling to dancing and in my early teenage years I started to focus on singing.

You recently released your new single ‘Be As I Am Metamorphosis’. What is the story behind this song? How was the recording and writing process?
It was a moment in my life where everyone around me tries to tell me what I can and cannot do or be. I fell in love with the title Be As I Am. The recording and writing process was great very smooth and fun.

Producer Austin Leeds who has worked with Avicii, Tiesto is behind the slick production of the track. Talk to us about this collaboration.
He’s an amazing producer. I let him do his thing and he always comes up with some hot music.

‘Be As I Am Metamorphosis’ is a new version of the same track that you released almost a year ago! What are the differences and your need to re-release the track?
I just wanted a different version. I love remixes and I always create an original version and different remixes. The difference is that the original is more of future house track and the remix has more of a bass house touch.

What do you find inspiring when you are writing your songs?
Anything can inspire me. I can get inspired by watching Tv or walking down the street. I would say my life and any moments can inspire me.

We are in love with your video! It is very uplifting! What’s the concept and do you have some funny behind-the-scenes stories to share with us?
Thank you I'm happy to hear that. The concept was to create a video behind the scenes. Me travelling. I was shooting in Milano and Switzerland. I thought it was really funny to see my dog inside my suitcase, therefore I had to incorporate it.

Who are your favourite artists? How do you incorporate their work in your sound?
I listen to all kind of music. I really like Madonna, Halsey, Nervo, Don Diablo, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and many others. When you listen to all your favourite artists, it naturally becomes part of you. The inspiration shows at a later point in one of my songs without consciously trying to do so.

Any plans for a tour or a new single?
Yes, definitely planning on it. The dates will be announced soon and yes more songs/ videos will be coming soon. I'm planning on releasing every 2 month a song/video.

Do you have a special message for your fans?
Dreams come true. Never give up.

Tenaj thank you very much for the interview.
Thank you guys for having me.
