Madman State speaks to Matterz about his new single 'Believe it Now'

1.       ‘Believe it now’ is an uplifting and positive song embracing one’s uniqueness and authenticity. I basically thought it a good idea to show people I’m not afraid of making music in my way that feels natural to me, I see people so easily swayed by new trends and fashions that it made me want to celebrate the power of being yourself and making things happen for yourself in this way. Creatively it all started with the beat production, producing the beat felt very uplifting to me and was almost like an evolutionary step in my creative process (if you take a look at previous songs of mine). Then writing the song the melodies came first with the subject of the overall song that lead to the rap lyrics.

2.       First and fore most I’ve always been a rapper and it started out this way. Obviously looking back now there’s so many accolades I’ve made as a musician from being a self-taught guitarist/pianist, supporting big acts and performing all across London. But when you take it back to the essence it started out as writing raps at home so I could go impress the guys the next day in the playground rap cyphers. Hip hop is where it all started for me, but my eclectic taste allowed me to implement elements of other genres and song-writing aspects into my music. I’m driven a lot by making powerful/memorable songs, and combining them with engaging visuals.

3.       It’s been tough not being able to go out and perform/network like before, but I never allow alone time to go to waste - been occupied finishing beats, songs, various collaborations and performing on Instagram live and zoom events. It’s also allowed me to reflect on my plan moving forward - I’ve got so many more releases lined up so my schedule is looking pretty exciting ;)

4.       For the rest of this year I’m going to continue dropping new stuff, more information will be available on that soon. As for 2021, I’ve learnt a lot from the occurrences of this year so I plan to continue refining my process of releasing songs and social media content. Also looking forward for the visuals I have planned for this year! Also I’ve had some exciting news regarding my bits of acting I do on the side but I won’t reveal too much just yet haha.

5.       Oooh this is a tough one. Considering Artists who are alive and breathing, I think working with one of my biggest influences would be a sick experience - Pharrell Williams. I literally studied how this guy plays chords and composes his songs! A few others I’d be super excited about working with - Kaytranada, Jamiroquai, Anderson Paak, Clams Casino & Kojey Radical to name a few…. My taste varies so much!

‘We can’t wait to hear more! ' Buzz Music  'New heat from London’s Madman State' Blatantly Blunt

Believe it Now is the latest nu-wave hip-hop anthem from London based rapper Madman State, supported by BRBradio.co.uk, DJ Shorty Of Chip Shop Radio and Reprezent Radio. The musician and producer has boundless energy and passion and is known for incorporating musical elements from other styles into his unique blend of hip hop and trap. The track features vocals from emotive singer Anousha, and the two’s performance chemistry can be seen in the glossy music video. Madman State says, “Believe it Now felt like a transition from where I was musically. I embraced writing authentic good-feeling melodies and flows. It only made sense to promote a positive message with this song. Anousha is an artist I've had the pleasure of working with before and has a light and gentle voice which I felt was perfect for the melodic appeal of this song. Additionally her input in the video helped elevate the visual to a higher level which I'm really happy with.”

Having supported the likes of Foreign Beggars, Onoe Caponoe (High Focus Records), MC Bushkin (Heartless Crew) and Children Of Zeus, Madman State is firmly embedded in the London hip-hop scene and has won a loyal fanbase.  He released his CBT Mixtape early 2018, with a collection of critically acclaimed visuals that assisted the project. The video for the single Tension was hand selected for a special screening at the 2020 London Music Video Festival award in July 2020 where it will be an entry for the competition. Madman State’s music has been featured on the ‘Stop, Speak, Support’ 2018 campaign launched by The Anti-Bullying Alliance. The piece was played nationwide across on-demand streaming services and also personally viewed by Prince William himself, who is a member of the Taskforce team in conjunction with the Anti Bullying Alliance. In October 2019 Madman State supported Foreign Beggars, performing at their last official tour together at Bedford Esquires. Madman State has appeared on various freestyle and online platforms, including  Fubar Radio, Pulse 88 Radio, Hype HQ Reality Radio, the GoBigTV Freestyle platform, Music of the Soul and And What LDN.

Exclusive Interview! Kev Kelly speaks to Matterz about his new single 'Everything's on Fire'

  1. Describe yourself

I’m Kev. I’m from New Jersey but I moved to Nashville for school when I was 19. I never really thought being a musician was going to be a real career path for me so I focused more on music supervising. I would try and watch a different movie every night and replace the songs that they played in the movies with different ones or I would try and score the scenes myself. That led to me writing original songs that I thought could take a scene from good to great. I found a producer who I really connected with and we started building songs and tracks and i was lucky enough to have them heard by the right people and got to sign my publishing deal. Aside from music I’m a huge sports fan and that’s a huge part of my every day so the quarantine has been less than ideal

  1. What is your music like?

I would say my sound is just a culmination of all the things I like. My dad would play oasis, frank sinatra, bill joel, the doors, Otis Redding. Sort of a wide array. When I started figuring out my own music tastes I was really into rap. I loved the way they sampled and repurposed old songs to make something completely new. I would say Kanye west is probably the best example of that. I really just try to make things I would like to listen to and not really care about the formula of a pop song

  1. Who are your influences?

Otis Redding, Jay Z, Stormzy, Kanye West, the 1975, Dave, dua lipa, childish gambino, Dermot Kennedy

  1. Is there a song you're listening to alot atm?

At the moment it would probably be “If you’re too shy” by the 1975. I love the 80’s feel. It’s great for summer

  1. What are you most proud of?

I would say convincing my parents that not becoming a doctor was the right call. I’m not sure they thought I could make money making music

  1. What is your career goal?

I would love to play certain venues. Here in Nashville that would be the ryman. Red rocks in Colorado and royal Albert hall

  1. What have you been doing with yourself during the lockdown?

This is going to sound ridiculous but every night at 5:57cst a man on the internet races horses on an electric track. It’s the one thing I look forward to daily

  1. Who would you love to work with?

Dream collab is tough. There are so many great artists out there that I would love to have the opportunity to work with. But at this moment it would probably be j Cole. I love his music and what he stands for. He’s an incredible lyricist

  1. Tell us about Everything's on Fire

Everything’s on fire is a song I wrote in about 15 minutes. When things weren’t going great in my personal life I had this dream where I was running through a burning city but I had set the fire. I woke up that morning and had the song written before I had a cup of coffee

South African hip hop artist from Brighton Mrisi releases 'West Baby'

Hip-hop/jazz artist from Brighton with South African roots. Performed across South Africa, UK festivals and cutting edge London venues including Ronnie Scott’s and The Roundhouse. Featured on Complex, BBC radio, ITV, Channel 4 & Link Up TV.

 Spotify Link | Complex Premiere

West Baby is the new South African rooted hip-hop track from spoken-word multi-faceted artist Mrisi. The lyrics are as complex, thought-provoking and profound as the vibe is instinctive, chilled and rolling.  Typical of what Mrisi’s fans expect from him, you can enjoy West Baby on every level. “This track is a juxtaposition of the protagonist's identity - partly from the West,  partly an outsider hailing from lands the West colonised. The song explores the idea that the West still holds false moral superiority to the rest of the world. Using the words Amandla (Power) and Hamba (Depart/Move) I have included words from one of my South African languages, ‘Shangaan Tsonga’ to signify the duality of my identity.” Mrisi

Mrisi released his debut EP Mamela in 2018 to critical acclaim. His music has appeared in broadcast media including; ITV, Channel 4, MTV, BBC Radio Asian Network, BBC News, Pyro Radio, Link Up TV and Sofar Sounds.  Mrisi has toured across the UK and South Africa, working alongside artists such as Omar, Prince Fatty, Kokoroko, Sadat X, Octavian, Yazmyn Hendrix and countless other established artists. His performances include events for the Commonwealth Games, Brighton Dome, Concord 2, The RoundHouse and the world famous Ronnie Scott’s. As a live experience, his shows feature drums, saxophone, bass, guitar, backing vocals and keys. He fuses evocative sounds of South Africa with gritty British rap narrative and lyrics that range from immigration to ‘black lives matter’ to conflicts of identity.

Mrisi plans to tour South Africa in 2020/21, developing links and sounds that reflect the UK/SA blend. He says I am half South African and a member of the Shangaan Tribe. Shangaan is a specific style of music that has really captured my imagination.” He plans to release Mama, a spoken word ballad that he performed live on BBC Asian Network. Mrisi has also written an EP with singer songwriter Yazmyn Hendrix which they plan to release later in 2020.
