MATTERZ Interview: Libby Whitehouse

Brighton singer-songwriter is back with a fresh new single "Cut It Off." We got the chance to chat with this rising star about her experience and her latest release.

  1. Hi, Libby! Welcome to MATTERZ. You recently released the single “Cut It Off,” what is the story behind this song?
The purpose and story behind the fun is basically for girls to know that they can be in charge too! I always hear songs and stories where the girls are under the boys thumb so I thought it’s time girls had their say and things were done on their terms, it’s not to be taken too seriously but to make sure girls know their worth. Girl power!!

  1. What first got you interested in music?
Ever since I was really young I’ve always taken a big interest in music it’s what I go to whether I’m happy or sad. Whatever emotion I’m feeling or mood I’m in I will always be listening to music to help. For me songwriting, and creating music, really helps with expressing the point I’m trying to make. I’ve always loved performing in general, whether it be dance, singing or acting….but music and singing was what I was drawn to the most.

  1. You’ve mentioned your passion for “girl power” in the past; how did you try to incorporate that message into “Cut It Off?”
Through the lyrics I really tried to get that message across, showing that girls can be in power, but in a light hearted fun way.

  1. You released three other singles last year, “Hands on Me,” “Recipe” and “What I Want.” How does “Cut It Off” differ from your previous singles?
I think ‘Cut It Off’ is very different from my last three 3 singles. The sound and vibe is very current, with an urban feel,  and definitely the sound I want to do more of in the studio. For me it’s all about experimenting in the studio and finding different sounds I love and creating great music.

  1. You were the Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist in Brighton in October 2017. How has the community in Brighton supported your musical career?
Yeah that was amazing! I think most people are also just intrigued, in Brighton everyone my age pretty much knows everyone else in our age group, so when they heard I was bringing out a single they were all really interested to see what it was all about and thankfully everyone really liked it and the support has been amazing!

  1. You attend the prestigious BIMM college. What are some of the best things about your experience there?
I’ve met some really lovely people through BIMM, teachers and students, and before going there I knew nothing about the business side of music so that has definitely helped me. I’ve also had the opportunity to perform at the Concorde a couple of times which is a really cool well known venue in Brighton.

  1. Many musical influences can be heard in your music. Who are some of your favourite influences and how have they impacted your music?
At the moment I’m really inspired by the music Raye is creating. Her vibe and songwriting  make an amazing combination which really shines through in her music so I’m definitely inspired by her sound right now.

  1. Your EP is due for release later this year. Do you have any plans for a special tour or gigs around the UK?
Yesss I’m very excited. There has been talk about a couple of shows, so stay tuned for more news on that, but at the moment it’s all about focusing on the EP.

  1. Do you have a special message for your fans?
Just a massive thank you to everybody who has been supporting my music. It makes me so happy to know people like listening to it as much as I enjoy making it, and thank you for all the kind words! :)

  1. Thank you so much for your time, Libby!
